MATHS
Division Detectives!

Introduction: Let's put on our detective hats and crack the case of division!

Materials: Paper, pencils, counters (buttons, beans, or small toys), a magnifying glass (optional, for extra detective flair!).

Activities:

  1. Sharing is Caring: Use counters to visualize division as sharing. For example, to solve 12 ÷ 3, divide 12 counters into 3 equal groups. How many counters are in each group?

  2. Grouping Goodies: Use counters to visualize division as grouping. For example, to solve 15 ÷ 5, make groups of 5 counters until you have used all 15 counters. How many groups did you make?

  3. Division Drawings: Draw pictures to represent division problems. For example, to solve 8 ÷ 2, draw 8 flowers and then circle groups of 2. How many groups of 2 are there? 💐

  4. Real-World Division: Think about real-life situations where you use division. For example, if you have 10 cookies to share equally among 5 friends, how many cookies does each friend get? 🍪

Helpful Tip: Remember that division is the opposite of multiplication. Use your multiplication facts to help you solve division problems!

SCIENCE
States of Matter! 🧊💧☁️

Introduction: Let's explore the fascinating world of matter and its different states!

Materials: Ice cubes, a pot, a stove (with adult supervision), a balloon, a freezer.

Activities:

  1. Melting Magic: Observe an ice cube melting. What happens to the ice as it melts? What state of matter is the ice? What state of matter is the water? 🧊➡️💧

  2. Boiling Point: With adult supervision, boil some water in a pot on the stove. What happens to the water as it boils? What do you see coming out of the pot? (Hint: it's water vapour, which is a gas!) 💧➡️☁️

  3. Balloon Blow-Up: Blow up a balloon and put it in the freezer for a few minutes. What happens to the balloon? Why do you think this happens? (Hint: the air inside the balloon contracts when it gets cold.) 🎈❄️

  4. States of Matter Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your house and find examples of solids, liquids, and gases. Can you find something that can change from one state to another? (Hint: think about butter or chocolate!) 🏡

Helpful Tip: Matter can exist in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Temperature affects the state of matter.
