MATHS
Fraction Feast! 🍕
Introduction: Let's slice up some fractions and learn about how they work in the kitchen!
Materials: Paper plates or circles cut from paper, scissors, markers, various ingredients for pizzas or other fraction-friendly foods (e.g., fruits, vegetables, crackers).
Activities:
Fraction Pizzas: Divide your paper plates or circles into equal slices to represent fractions (halves, quarters, eighths, etc.). Colour each slice a different colour and label them with their fraction. Now you have "pizza fractions"! 🍕
Fraction Addition: Use your pizza fractions to add fractions with the same denominator. For example, if you have 1/4 of a pizza and add another 2/4, how much pizza do you have in total? (3/4!) ➕
Fraction Subtraction: Practice subtracting fractions with the same denominator. If you start with 5/8 of a pizza and eat 2/8, how much is left? (3/8!) ➖
Real-Life Fractions: Use real food to explore fractions. Cut fruits and vegetables into halves, quarters, or thirds. Make a snack platter with different fraction representations. For example, you could have a plate with 1/2 an apple, 1/4 of a banana, and 1/3 of a cucumber. 🍎🍌🥒
Helpful Tip: Fractions are everywhere in the kitchen! Baking and cooking are great ways to practice fraction skills in a fun and engaging way.
FOOD & NUTRITION
Rainbow on a Plate! 🌈
Introduction: Let's explore the wonderful world of fruits and vegetables and create a colourful and healthy meal!
Materials: A variety of colourful fruits and vegetables, a cutting board, a knife (with adult supervision), bowls, skewers (optional).
Activities:
Colourful Creations: Visit a grocery store or farmers market and choose fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colours. Can you find something red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet? 🍓🥕🍌🥦🍇🍆
Taste the Rainbow: Taste each fruit and vegetable. Describe its flavour, texture, and smell. Which colours do you like the best? 😋
Rainbow Salad: Create a colourful salad using your rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Cut them into bite-sized pieces and arrange them in a rainbow pattern on your plate. 🥗
Rainbow Skewers (Optional): Make rainbow fruit skewers by threading different coloured fruits onto skewers. This is a fun and healthy snack! 🍡
Helpful Tip: Eating a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables provides our bodies with essential vitamins and minerals. Make eating the rainbow a fun and delicious habit!
