What We’ve Done This Week: 4th November 2019

Monday

I’ll admit that not much got done today. I had some work things that had to be done, so the girls played together for most of the morning.

After that we went over to visit family, popping into the shops on the way home. The girls had their usual karate lesson this evening.

Tuesday

I love our Tuesdays; we walk up to the library and then pop into a cafe run by a local church. Today we spent about an hour in the library. The girls both chose plenty of fiction books and then spent a bit of time looking through some art books.

After our trip to the cafe, we went home and did some learning about rain. I asked the girls to tell me anything at all that they know about rain and we created a brainstorm. I asked them if they knew about the water cycle (they didn’t), and I drew that and labelled it for them.

As the weather here is forecasting rain for the next couple of weeks, we made a rain gauge. I enjoyed this; we talked about units of measurement, what container would work best, why a fair test is important; how we could make our test fair and how to record our results.

Knowing how long this kind of thing would take in a “proper lesson” at school, I was amazed at how much we got through in under an hour. Beats dragging it out over a few weeks with 30 children!

As it’s Bonfire Night, after lunch we created some chalk firework pictures. Top tip: spray chalk pictures with hairspray; it acts as a fixative.

Wednesday

Today was art class. We go over to The Crafty Cow every two weeks and the girls have a teacher-led session which they really enjoy. In their last session they created mythical creatures and today they started to paint them.

Thursday

Today was our fortnightly visit to forest school; definitely a highlight for all of us. I haven’t had any luck finding a regular forest school session nearby, so we end up travelling an hour away for this one.

The World Outside is run by Sandra and we love the sessions with her. What’s great about them is that they’re totally child-led. The girls have built dens, toasted crumpets, been on bug hunts, got messy in the mud kitchen, made things out of clay, sawed wood and made decorations, helped build a bug hotel and more. The adults sit around the camp fire (which is lovely at this time of year) and generally leave the kids to it.

This week P made this pretty awesome mushroom sculpture. The girls have also made a friend there so they had a great time with her.

Friday

We were meant to be going to our regular Home Ed group this afternoon, but that went by the wayside when my brother needed my help with something. After that, we took the girls over to soft play for a couple of hours. Soft play isn’t my first choice of fun, but at least in the daytime now we can go when it’s quiet!

So that’s our week. I’m glad we did some planned learning this week, but equally if the girls hadn’t been receptive to it then we wouldn’t have. Our regular visits to art class and forest school are a big hit (I’ll write about those separately later) and we all enjoy trips to the library.

Next week might not feel as interesting; at the moment we haven’t anything planned. I find it hard to have a busy week and then a quiet week, but we’re still finding our rhythm.
